Many of the area&#8217;s buildings survived both the Kanto Earthquake and the carpet bombing of WWII. Walking the small streets, you get a feel for how Tokyo must have looked like a long time ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/yanaka01.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"yanaka01\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/yanaka01-580x433.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The streets are often very narrow, less than the four and six meters usually stipulated in building codes after the earthquake and the war respectively. This makes large parts of the area unaccessible by car. Scooters and bikes are the main choice of transportation. Often, I found that wooden structures are being refurbished or replaced. I also noticed a few carpenter shops selling timber ware here and there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/yanaka06.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"yanaka06\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/yanaka06-580x776.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"776\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/yanaka05.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"yanaka05\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/yanaka05-580x776.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"776\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The area is home to countless temples and the large <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yanaka_Cemetery\">Yanaka\u00a0Cemetery<\/a>\u00a0 Here, we spotted two interesting gravestones which we hadn&#8217;t seen like this on Japanese\u00a0cemeteries\u00a0before:<a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/yanaka08.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"yanaka08\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/yanaka08-580x433.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"yanako09\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/yanako09-580x776.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"776\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/scaithebathhouse.com\/\">SCAI The Bathhouse<\/a> is an interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/read.artspacetokyo.com\/spaces\/scai-the-bathhouse\/\">art space<\/a> in Yanaka that is worth seeing on one&#8217;s way to Ueno Park.<\/p>\n<p>A friend of mine alerted me to Funahashi Atsushi&#8217;s film &#8220;Yanako boshoku&#8221; which premiered at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival. After a long stint in New York, the filmmaker returned to Japan and moved into Yanaka. This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.berlinale.de\/external\/en\/filmarchiv\/doku_pdf\/20096682.pdf\">film synopsis<\/a> has some of his very interesting observations about the area.
