They even went as far as suggesting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.handelsblatt.com\/politik\/deutschland\/streit-um-den-veggieday-der-gruenen-freitag-bleibt-die-kueche-kalt-renate-sammelt-im-wald\/8596406.html?ticket=ST-381481-0kyBF0aenX1Ivv3fCoo9-ap6\">&#8220;veggie Friday&#8221;<\/a>, in meat-loving Germany!<\/p>\n<p>Now they have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/politik\/deutschland\/gruene-wollen-amazon-verbieten-retouren-zu-vernichten-a-1271675.html\">suggested<\/a> to ban private fireworks, put a small deposit on coffee cups and prohibit gravel pit as a surface cover in cities. They&#8217;re flying high on their recent electoral successes and can seriously contemplate becoming the strongest party in Germany if elections were called later this year.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think anyone has any problem with their ideas and understands their rationale. It&#8217;s just the scale and lack of boldness in them that I find striking, coming from a Green party that was once known to be a hotbed of radicalism but has long lost its zeal. My friend Gareth <a href=\"https:\/\/jacobinmag.com\/2017\/08\/neoliberals-with-wind-farms\/\">calls<\/a> them &#8220;neoliberals with wind farms&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>You can&#8217;t pile dozens of regulations on your population to nudge consumption patterns, while the elephant in the room, the current economic system and its reliance on hydrocarbons, remains untouched. The Greens&#8217; ideas to avert climate change are not going to bring about the rapid change needed to avert climate catastrophe. The &#8220;Fridays for the Future&#8221; campaign has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merkur.de\/politik\/fridays-for-future-aktivistin-spricht-klartext-und-kritisiert-klimapolitik-gruenen-zr-12046048.html\">rightly called <\/a>them out on it.<\/p>\n<p>Some other climate-related thoughts have come out of reading a few Jacobin stories on top of the one linked above recently, including on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobinmag.com\/2018\/08\/its-okay-to-have-children\/\">&#8220;why it&#8217;s OK to have children&#8221;<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/jacobinmag.com\/2018\/08\/air-conditioning-climate-change-energy-pollution?fbclid=IwAR2k4YSJQylcrlY1qssLZlo6-DM8BsGxCCZCrtQ5bOCqx6O9snFMcaaGiC4\">&#8220;in defense of air conditioning&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0and on the <a href=\"https:\/\/jacobinmag.com\/2019\/06\/green-new-deal-social-care-work?fbclid=IwAR30zSoR0yUJ9c8tI7H-pWwYn6fsne8SX_r-c6oPm-CgnClx06saqXmgGVg\">&#8220;green new deal&#8221;<\/a> by Thiti Bhattacharya.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Greens are known to come up with what many perceive as draconian regulations to protect the environment.
