It takes a bit more than ten hours yet is surprisingly very affordable. Herewith some impressions from the short trip up north.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal05.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2595 alignnone\" alt=\"montreal05\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal05-580x427.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal05-580x427.jpg 580w, https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal05.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Looking at Elevator #2 from McGill Street<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Despite freezing weather (-20 Celsius on Monday morning), we were lucky on Saturday when milder temperatures allowed for a walk through the port area,\u00a0home to five at least partially\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/arkinetblog.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/12\/abandonned-buildings-in-montreal-grain-elevators\/\">abandoned grain silos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal03.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"montreal03\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal03-580x435.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal02.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"montreal02\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal02-580x435.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We walked along here, braving snow and ice, while en route to Habitat 67, more on which later. Le Corbusier <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlanticcities.com\/design\/2012\/06\/hardest-re-use-grain-elevators\/2293\/\">liked these grain silos<\/a>, for him the first expression of purely utilitarian architecture:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Thus we have the American grain elevators and factories, the magnificent\u00a0first-fruits of the new age.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The sixties and seventies saw Montreal harbouring large ambitions, with the Expo 67 and the 1976 Summer Olympics taking place here. Almost two decades later, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1346&amp;dat=19920216&amp;id=rJYsAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=IPwDAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=1188,2331596\">not much confidence was left<\/a>, however.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal04.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2596 alignnone\" alt=\"montreal04\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal04-580x774.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal04-580x774.jpg 580w, https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal04.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the city centre, above, one finds the Delta Centre-Ville, built in 1976. It closed its doors last year and is currently being transformed into student accommodation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal10.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2610 alignnone\" alt=\"montreal10\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal10-580x453.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal10-580x453.jpg 580w, https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal10.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 1967 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com\/en\/article\/place-bonaventure\/\">Place Bonaventure<\/a> was the second-largest commercial building at the time of its opening. From here, one can enter <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Underground_City,_Montreal\">Montreal&#8217;s underground city<\/a>, a handy thing given the city&#8217;s brutal winters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal09.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2611 alignnone\" alt=\"montreal09\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal09-580x435.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal09-580x435.jpg 580w, https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal09.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Mont Royal metro station<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal08.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2612 alignnone\" alt=\"montreal08\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal08-580x894.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal08-580x894.jpg 580w, https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/montreal08.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And lastly, the 2005 <a href=\"http:\/\/archiseek.com\/2009\/2005-mcgill-university-music-faculty-montreal-quebec\/#.UykOy-ezBxE\">McGill University Music Faculty<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We got back from a weekend visiting friends in Montreal yesterday.\u00a0There is a daily\u00a0Amtrak service from NYC Penn Station\u00a0all the way to Canada.
