The variety, the freshness and the dedication and love with which almost any meal is prepared is second to none. Since arriving in New York, we took a variety of ramen stops and enjoyed one <em>kaiseki<\/em> dinner. It&#8217;s been OK, but no match to our time in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/japanfood01.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1768 alignnone\" alt=\"japanfood01\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/japanfood01-580x433.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/japanfood01-580x433.jpg 580w, https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/japanfood01.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Beef avocado sushi, near Shibuya station<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Each time we arrived in Tokyo or had visitors, we usually went to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ippudo.com\/index.html\">Ippudo<\/a>, a Kyushu ramen chain that had a branch close to where we were living. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeout.jp\/en\/tokyo\/feature\/6608\/20-Tokyo-ramen-shops-you-have-to-visit\">more famous ramen restaurants<\/a> in Shibuya and further afield were saved for later.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, Ippudo has two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ippudony.com\/\">branches<\/a>\u00a0in New York. The one we went to on the East side of town was on the pricey side, felt like a nightclub, had really excellent <em>tonkotsu<\/em> ramen but fairly average veggie ramen (!).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ramensetagayany.com\/\">Setagaya ramen<\/a> on St. Mark&#8217;s isn&#8217;t worth venturing out to, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/menkui-tei-new-york-2\">Menkui-Tei<\/a> around the corner was only marginally better. I won&#8217;t even mention the name of the place I went to in Queens. Anyway, while NY seems the &#8220;ramen central&#8221; of the Western hemisphere, it is no match to Japan unless you count the expensive Ippudo ramen to your staples.<\/p>\n<p>Great footage from Tampopo, the first-ever ramen western to be filmed (1985):<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6WrkdTrrwew\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In other Japanese food news, I read this interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/johnmahoney\/the-notorious-msgs-unlikely-formula-for-success\">Buzzfeed article<\/a> on MSG and why it really may not be so bad for you. Dubbed the fifth taste, it has become a food pariah since the so-called &#8220;Chinese restaurant syndrome&#8221; (numb neck etc.) was first described in the late 1960s. A complete no-go in today&#8217;s health-conscious societies, celebrity chefs are preparing the ground for the substance&#8217;s eventual rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, while researching transistor radios, I came across the life of late Japanese business legend <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Den_Fujita\">Den Fujita<\/a>. He\u00a0famously got rich selling radios to the US in the 1960s. He later founded McDonald&#8217;s and took the Japanese brand public in the 1980s. One of his\u00a0&#8220;famous&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rutherfordjournal.org\/article020110.html\">quotes<\/a> concludes\u00a0today&#8217;s slightly off-topic\u00a0post:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The reason Japanese people are so short and have yellow skins is because they have eaten nothing but fish and rice for two thousand years [\u2026] if we eat McDonald\u2019s hamburgers and potatoes for a thousand years we will become taller, our skin will become white and our hair blonde.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The food has been one of the major perks of our time in Japan.
