I am staying with my in-laws in Woolwich Arsenal and they\u00a0have splendid views across the Thames. Come to think of it, a chunk of my recent London exploration has had a connection to this river in one way or another.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames08.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1292\" alt=\"thames08\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames08-580x433.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames08-580x433.jpg 580w, https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames08.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em> Margate, where the Thames has long completed its journey to join the ocean. May 2012<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In East London, I have <a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/?p=1059\">walked<\/a> through some parts of the Docklands, taking a look at Millenium Wharf and the new Air Link that connects the ExCel Centre with the O2 on the southern side of the river. Last week, we visited the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumoflondon.org.uk\/Docklands\/\">Docklands Museum<\/a> near Canary Wharf.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames01.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"thames01\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames01-580x326.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a great place to get a sense of the history of London&#8217;s main water artery. We took a guided tour which was good but didn&#8217;t allow for reading the panels in the permanent collection.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a an exhibition on currently which is absolutely worth seeing. <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumoflondon.org.uk\/Docklands\/Whats-on\/Exhibitions-Displays\/Estuary.htm\">Estuary<\/a><\/em> brings together 12 artists who have been inspired by the outer limits of the river.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames05.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"thames05\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames05-580x433.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Woolwich Arsenal, General Gordon Square<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames06.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1294 alignnone\" alt=\"thames06\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames06-580x433.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames06-580x433.jpg 580w, https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames06.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A few stops on the Southeastern Rail line lies <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gravesend,_Kent\">Gravesend<\/a>, a town of 60,000 inhabitants. Its strategic position in the Thames Gateway helped to make it the headquarters of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pla.co.uk\/\">Port of London Authority<\/a>. Pocahontas was buried here when she died en route back to Virginia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames07.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"thames07\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames07-580x433.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most interestingly, though, Gravesend is home to Europe&#8217;s biggest Sikh community temple, or <em>Gurdwara<\/em> as it is called. We were given a great tour\u00a0by a Sikh elder who showed us the various rooms for worship and community life. We enjoyed a (fantastic) meal prepared largely by volunteers before leaving.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kentarchaeology.org.uk\/01\/2011-09-22-report-cc-visit.pdf\">This account<\/a>\u00a0by a Christian committee writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Sikh community arrived in Gravesend from East Africa in the 1950s and\u00a01960s to work in the extensive docks and factories. Building of the temple was\u00a0commenced in 2000 and the community moved into it in 2010. So far it has\u00a0cost \u00a314m and a further \u00a31m is needed to complete the building. The site was\u00a0originally wasteland. It is the biggest in Europe and is modelled on the Golden\u00a0Temple in Amritsar (&#8230;)\u00a0The Sikh community of about 8-10,000 people is very much part of Gravesend and welcome all into their\u00a0Gurdwara.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Back in London, I took another walk from St. Katherine&#8217;s Dock near Tower Bridge via Wapping back to Shadwell. Despite having lived in London for several years, much of the area had remained unknown to me before.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames03.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"thames03\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames03-580x433.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames04.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1296 alignnone\" alt=\"thames04\" src=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames04-580x433.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames04-580x433.jpg 580w, https:\/\/benbansal.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/thames04.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Shadwell Basin and much of the quays between here and St. Katherine&#8217;s Dock are lined by rather unappealing faux dockside warehouses built as residential developments in the 1980s and 90s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Back from Burma and en route to Germany and the US, we&#8217;ve stopped by London again.
